Wellness and Mental Health Services
Canada Bureau for African and Caribbean Immigrants (CBACI)
According to a 2019 report by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, a large portion of the current imbalance in mental health care within the Black African community is a result of several factors; including the historical trauma Black people experienced as a result of racism, colonialism, enslavement, and oppression.
However, research indicates that there are several interventions which can be put in place to help immigrants to alleviate mental health issues. According to Fenta et al. (2004), social resources like support from family and the ethnic community, ethnic pride, and proficiency in the language of the host nation are linked to improved mental health. "Social support enhances coping, moderates the impact of stressors and promotes health," according to Simich et al. (2005) (16). The authors also point out that in addition to its protective qualities, social support gives people the tools they need to deal with and overcome life's obstacles.
That is where CBACI comes in; our mental health and Wellness program is geared to removing obstacles and guaranteeing African and Caribbean Canadian immigrants equitable access to available mental health care services.
